Position Title: Sunflower News Community Manager
Hours: 10 hours per week at $25/hour
Duration: 6 months to start, potentially long-term
Location: Remote (preferably in Pacific Standard Time)
About Us:
Sunflower News is an Oregon-based news curation + community project bringing together people, organizations, and technology in the global climate movement. We’re partnering with global organizations including Indigenous-rights group Cultural Survival, technology advisorship Exponential View, and climate jobs community Climatebase. We believe that building connections in the climate movement is one of the most powerful things our small team can do and we’ve got some great momentum in doing so.
Position Overview:
We are looking for a second passionate and engaging Community Manager to join our team. In this remote role, you will play a crucial part in connecting people and organizations within the climate movement to each other and to Sunflower, including journalists, nonprofit organizers, and entrepreneurs. Leveraging our weekly newsletter that curates the top climate news and solutions – as well as future events, reports, and our in-development news aggregation app – you’ll initiate outreach and follow-ups with key stakeholders to build relationships and collaborative opportunities in the climate space. You’ll be working closely with another Community Manager and our Sunflower News Editor.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Outreach and Connection Building:
- Proactively reach out and respond to individuals and organizations within the climate movement to establish and track connections
- Stay updated on our partner organizations’ activities and look for opportunities to support them
- Collaborate with our editorial team to coordinate content creation and outreach efforts
2. Communication and Networking:
- Communicate effectively through emails, social media, video conferences, and other platforms as needed
- Represent the team you’ll be joining effectively and with enthusiasm in all interactions
Qualifications:
- A zest for meeting new people and making connections
- Passionate feelings about climate change and environmental issues
- Interest in all the angles, from intersectional climate justice to climate tech and green jobs
- Clear, energetic, and professional written and verbal communication
- Comfort with speaking publicly in groups as well as in one-on-one conversation
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Proficiency in using social media, email, and other digital communication tools
- Experience in networking and relationship-building required
- Experience in managing online community spaces (e.g. forums, social media) is a plus
- Previous experience in a similar role or volunteer work in the environmental sector is desirable but not required
- Sales, fundraising, grant writing experience, or financial savvy a plus
