Cultural Survival, a partner of Sunflower News, celebrated their 50th anniversary last year as a global leader in the fight for Indigenous sovereignty. Their work is crucial, as Indigenous communities face new challenges in the ongoing transitions toward sustainable energy. These challenges stem from the unfortunately still extractive and colonial priorities of emerging post-carbon economies. Relatedly, prejudice, bigotry, and patriarchy continue to threaten Indigenous ways of being, including their right to gender liberation. The latest issue of their quarterly magazine titled, “Decolonizing Gender”, delves into these challenges and more.
Over the weekend, I sat down and read the magazine from cover to cover. The articles highlight the importance of considering different perspectives when working toward a sustainable future. I enjoyed learning more about Indigenous perspectives on topics such as gender equity, climate justice, and human rights. I encourage folks to check out their work and let us know what other thoughts or ideas come up for you after reading the issue.
Lastly, Cultural Survival is hosting a webinar on Decolonizing Gender on Feb 1, 2023, 01:00 PM ET. You can learn more about it and register here.
